Playing horror : narrative and genre in Valve's Left 4 Dead Series
2013
The place of story and narrative in digital games has been a hotly contested topic within the field of Game Studies during the past two decades. Beyond the question of whether games can or should be used for telling stories, research interest has focused on the nature of game narratives and their distinct qualities in comparison to other expressive media, like literature and film. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to this debate by examining the elements involved in storytelling not in digital games overall, but in one particular series, namely Valve Software‘s Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2. The use of this in-depth case study allows an examination of how various different elements co…
Studying the field of game studies : a proposal model to categorize game studies
2016
Geography's interest in the disciplinary potential of the video game manifested itself later than in other sciences, but this is consistent with the development and the eruption on the scene of those elements considered interesting precisely for geographical analysis. The contribution intends to enhance all the elements of …
Toward a formal sociology of online harassment
2019
Online harassment and various subcategories of it, like doxing and swatting, have attracted enormous interest for several years now—and particular interest in the world of game studies in the wake of 2014’s GamerGate harassment campaign. Such protracted, crowdsourced campaigns remain undertheorized, however. Using contemporary research to modify Georg Simmel’s formal sociological method, I provide researchers and the wider public with an easily visualized structure that most harassment campaigns follow: the form of an inverted pyramid bearing down on an individual target, stratified into three orders of harassment, each defined by level of severity and invasiveness. With this form, the publ…

The Role of the Philosophy of Technology in French-Language Studies of Video Games
2018
This chapter analyzes the role played by the philosophies of technology in the development of French-language studies devoted to video games. This intellectual tradition is well represented within the field, in a variety of forms which are characteristic of the main trends in the French-language philosophy of technology. The field of games studies allows comparing and contrasting these different approaches to a single object. I analyze the specificities of the French-language field, its theoretical options, and the role played by the philosophy of technology in its points of divergence from the dominant trends in game studies. Four studies located at the intersection between philosophy of t…
